The historic record of blistering sunshine for the Annual Topper Open Meeting at Blackwater Sailing Club seemed to have broken this year as Saturday dawned grey and overcast, however it did not deter the 27 entrants that came to enjoy what has become a fixture on the Eastern Traveller Series. As well as some regular names making the trip, there were some new faces joining the fleet who headed off downriver soon to be greeted by a big squall and buckets of rain.
The race officer was awaiting the fleet having set a good size triangle sausage course and as the last of the fleet arrived at the starting area they seemed to have brought the sunshine with them. The fleet got away cleanly at the first attempt and picked their way up the course helped by a strong flood tide. The wind was shifting around and it was a tussle at the front. At the top mark, the leading bunch set off downwind to the gybe mark and once around, enjoyed a strong luffing battle which let the chasing pack close the gap. The lead was up for grabs by a number of sailors however it was Stephen Clayton from Royal Harwich Yacht Club who took the gun ahead of George Hunter with Penny Weiser taking third.

Following the success of the World Championships in 2009 held with a 20 strong Sprite Fleet at the Club, Sprite Week has been revived after an absence of 30 years. It was held at the beginning of June 2011 with eight races over 4 days – racing for the Heron Cup which has been competed for since 1954.
Day 1 was a very gusty day, force 3-4 and variable wind conditions with the fleet of 10 dinghies sailing
with very close racing and changing positions to get the week underway.
Winner of Races 1 & 2 Graham and Tricia Parker - Thaleia
Day 2 had variable and light breezes with two shortened courses due to lack of wind, but the races were finished with lots of very exciting position changes and spinnaker work due to the variable conditions.

The MaldonYacht Club’s Cruiser Cup was sailed on Saturday June 11th. The 15 entries that came to the line were greeted by the lightest of south westerly’s which soon subsided to flat calm!
After nearly 2 hours drifting, sometimes backwards in Rocker’s case, a steady breeze filled in from the south. A fast, shy spinnaker reach out to the North Eagle followed, sailed brilliantly by Triton, Diva and Caroline, then around a triangle and back into the estuary.
At St. Peters the southerly switched off and the fleet bunched before a fresh south westerly finally settled in for a fast beat back to Osea.
The overall winner, in a close race, should have been new entry Dan Dare (First 25.7 Alan Hoy BSC) who made the most of the favourable conditions to push out Diva, second, and Bobtail (Sun 2000 Terry Crook BSC) another debutante. However, after the race Dan Dare retired after accepting she had missed out Thirslet Buoy on the way home – life can be very cruel, but full marks for honesty, Alan. Thus Diva was promoted to winner, Bobtail to second and Warratah (First 25.7 Geoff White BSC) to third.
